SAINT MARY'S UNIVERSITY SELECTS DYMAXION AS MAJOR I.T. PROVIDER FOR NEW VIRTUAL UNIVERSITY
Leading Atlantic University Awards Halifax-based Dymaxion $1,000,000 Contract to Implement Windows NT Server 4.0 as Network Platform and 300 HP Workstations
Halifax, July 30, 1998 -- Dymaxion Research Ltd. today announced that Saint Mary's University has selected Dymaxion to implement Windows NT Server 4.0 as their network platform and provide over three hundred Hewlett-Packard (HP) NT workstations throughout thirteen multimedia classrooms and new computer labs. Saint Mary's University, a leading Atlantic Canadian university, is creating a new virtual university on campus. This coincides with the opening of The Sobey Building, an $18 million facility that marks the beginning of an exciting era of teaching and learning.
"Giving our graduates a competitive advantage in the workforce is our primary concern," said Randy Raymond, Saint Mary's director, information technology systems and support. "We determined that Dymaxion, combined with Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard, would deliver the best computing tools for our students while providing the University with cost-effectiveness and future flexibility."
Dymaxion will provide significant technical services to convert five Novell Servers to NT, and configure Microsoft SMS with HP's Top Tools for asset management. A separate NT Server configured with Microsoft Proxy will provide security and firewall functionality. These new products will enable the University to enjoy increased system security, manageability, expandability and performance.
The summer promises to be extremely busy for the Dymaxion/Saint Mary's technical team. Added to the challenge of upgrading the network and installing the new hardware, there are several hundred legacy PCs to integrate and, although it is summer, the University network is in full use.
"We offered a team approach with the University, Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard working together," said Nick Jupp, vice president of operations at Dymaxion Research Ltd. "It's a real partnership because we all have a vested interest in this project succeeding." This partnership will help establish Saint Mary's pre-eminence in the use of technology in the classroom. Students will have a learning platform that is unique in Canada while fostering Saint Mary's commitment to student-centred learning. The Sobey Building will rival the best instructional facilities in North America.
